BILLINGS, Mont.-- The San Francisco State Gators recorded their first shutout of the 2016 season as they blanked the hosts, Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets, 2-0 this afternoon in Billings, Montana. With the win, the Gators improve to 1-1-1 while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-3.
"We responded well from a disappointing first weekend," said San Francisco State head coach
Tracy Hamm. "We knew what we needed to do differently and we executed."
Sierra Sagasta scored her third goal of the season as she connected on a header off a cross from
Jada Williams in the 17
th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Gators had a chance to double their lead in the 27
th minute, but
Taylor Halstenson's shot was stopped by Lili Delgadillo.
Jada Williams connected off that missed shot by Halstenson to give the Gators a 2-0 lead mid-way through the second half.
Montana State-Billings had a chance to cut into the Gator lead in the 38
th minute, but Kalin Sandow's shot sailed high over the goal and the match went into the half with a San Francisco State 2-0 lead.
The Gators controlled the second as they held a 12-1 advantage in shot attempts including 4-1 in shot on goal attempts. They had several chances to increase their lead throughout the half including twice in the 47
th minute, with the Yellowjacket goalkeeper stopped
Liz Borders and
Autumn Fox's shot on goal attempts.
"There were several fantastic individual performances, as well as a team commitment to staying disciplining both in the attack and defensively," added Hamm. "It is encouraging to get our first win from a solid team performance. We needed everyone to contribute and they did. Everyone played well and we are looking forward to Saturday."
Christina Holguin recorded two saves in goal for the Gators in her first shutout as a member of the San Francisco State women's soccer team.
The Gators will return to the pitch this Saturday at noon MDT when they face Western State Colorado who defeated Mary University today 5-0.
