Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Matt Fontenot

Moguel’s Career Night Not Enough For @SFState_WBB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Thursday night's game featured six ties and 17 lead changes and saw a herculean performance from senior Donae Moguel, but in the end host Cal State San Marcos came out on top, defeating the San Francisco State women's basketball team 73-65 at The Sports Center.

SF State (2-17/0-12 CCAA) had one of their better offensive performances of the season.  The 65 points is second most, just one-point shy of the season-high scored against Holy Names on November 15.  For the evening, the Gators shot 35.4 percent going 23-for-65 from the floor.  From 3-point range, SF State was a little better, shooting 36.8 percent from beyond the arc, going 7-for-19.  From the free throw-line the Gators were once again exceptional, going 12-for-16.

Moguel owned the paint, she finished with her third double-double of the season and second in as many games, scoring a team-high 17 points while grabbing 20 rebounds.  The 20 rebounds are a new career-high.  Her 11 offensive rebounds would have been enough for a game-high.

Joining Moguel in double figures for SF State was Kaitlin DaDalt who scored 16.  DaDalt was 5-for-14 from the field, but was hot from 3-point range, going 4-for-8, none bigger than a tide-turning 3-point bucket with four seconds left in the first quarter to bring the Gators to within seven.  Felicia Villarruel chipped in nine, while Toni Edwards added seven.

In the end, the Gators could not overcome Cal State San Marcos's (10-8/7-6 CCAA) duo of Savannah Camp and Ashley Jenkins who combined to score 45 of the Cougars 73 points.  Camp finished with a game-high 25, while Jenkins scored 20.

GAME NOTES

Double-Double Donae
With her 20 rebounds and 17 points, Moguel has recorded her third double-double of the season and second in as many games.  She has grabbed eight or more rebounds in six of the last seven contests.

Cleaning The Glass
One more note about Moguel's incredible night in the rebound column.  Her 20 boards are the most by a Gator since former SFSU forward Brianna Harden grabbed 19 against Cal State San Bernardino on January 17, 2014.  For the season, Moguel now has 62 offensive rebounds, second most in the CCAA.

Season High In The Plus Rebound Category
The Gators finished the night with 41 rebounds, the fourth highest mark they have had all season, but for just the fourth time all year, the Gators outrebounded their opponent.  SF State held the Cougars to just 31 rebounds, giving the Gators a plus-13 in the rebound column, a season high.

Next Up
The Gators will return home next week when they host Stanislaus State on Friday, February 3.  That game will be the Gators "Spirit Night" and will be televised regionally on Comcast Hometown Network.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
