TURLOCK, Calif.-- The No. 21 San Francisco State Gators held Stanislaus State to just 37% shooting including 31% from three-point range to key their 65-50 road conference win over the Warriors this evening. With the win, the Gators swept this weekend's road conference games and improved to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA.
Derrick Brown paced the Gators with 16 points. The senior shot six-for-twelve from the field including connecting on four his nine attempts from beyond the arc.
Nick Calcaterra chipped in 12 points while
Coley Apsay added 11 points for the victors.
The Gators used a 13-0 run late in the first half to take a 28-15 lead and never looked back. During that stretch, the senior guard trio of
Coley Apsay,
Nick Calcaterra and
Warren Jackson scored all 13 points for the visitors. A three by Apsay with off an assist by
Ryne Williams gave the Gators their largest lead of the half, 34-17.
SFSU outscored the Warriors 15-9 to take a 52-30 lead in the first seven minutes of the second half. Stanislaus State (4-10, 1-6 CCAA) would not go away as the Warriors cut the deficit to 56-43 with just under four minutes to go. That is the closest the Warriors would get as the Gators took the 65-50 road conference contest.
The Gators will now return home next weekend for a pair of conference games. They will host No. 15 UC San Diego on Friday, January 13 and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, January 14. Tip-off for both nights is set for 7:30pm at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.
GAME NOTES
GATORS: The Gators took their two conference road games this weekend by defeating Cal State L.A. 89-70 this past Thursday evening and Stanislaus State 65-50 this evening. The Gators are now 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA which ties them for second place with Chico State.
COACH'S QUOTES: "Whenever you can get a road CCAA sweep it is a great accomplishment," said SFSU head coach
Paul Trevor. "Tonight it was defense that did it for us as our press got us going," added Trevor. "I am proud of the way our seniors were able to get us the sweep on the road this weekend."
3-1: San Francisco State is now 3-1 this season when the Gators score under 70 points. They are 10-0 when the score over 70 points in a game. The Gators three wins when scoring under 70 points are all on the road at Notre Dame de Namur, Sonoma State and Stanislaus State. Their one loss was at Chico State. The Gators are now 26-3 in the last two years when they score 70 points or more in a game including 10-0 this season.
4.5 TO 1: Coley Apsay finished the weekend with nine assists and two turnovers in the Gators' two games. On Thursday night, he had six assists and just one turnover to go along with his 19 points. He also had two steals in 33 minutes. Then this evening, he scored 11 points, had three assists and one turnover with one steal.
DOWNTOWN DERRICK BROWN: Derrick Brown paced the Gators with 16 points as he went six for twelve from the field including four of nine from three-point land. Besides Brown and Apsay in double figures,
Nick Calcaterra added 12 points, four rebounds and three steals for the Gators.
DEFENSE WINS: The Gators held Stanislaus State to just 37% shooting including 22% from three-point range and forced 21 turnovers. Of those turnovers, nine were on steals with
Nick Calcaterra leading the way with three followed by
Chiefy Ugbaja's two. Four other Gators had one apiece in
Derrick Brown,
AJ Kahlon,
Coley Apsay and
Warren Jackson.
BACK HOME: SFSU will return home this weekend for a pair of games against No. 15 UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino. The Gators will host UC San Diego on Friday, January 13 and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, January 14. Tip-off for both nights are scheduled for 7:30pm.
