SAN FRANCISCO — Senior
Laura Shea's late penalty kick helped the San Francisco State women's soccer team pick up a point on Friday in a 1-1 double overtime draw versus Cal Poly Pomona at Cox Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 in the 87th minute, the Gators (9-4-2/4-3-2 CCAA) caught a break when a Broncos (9-5-2/5-4-2 CCAA) defender was whistled for a hand ball inside the box. That set up the penalty kick and the senior converted for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
"We battled to the end against a tough team. I'm happy we continued to find ways to score.," said San Francisco State Head Coach
Tracy Hamm. "We need to finish our early chances. It changes the game and tactics when you can do that."
The first half saw neither team fire a shot on goal.
Bianca Lowe had a golden opportunity in the opening minutes. She beat the defense and drew the keeper out but Lowe's shot was too strong and missed wide right. Lowe had another opportunity midway through the first half.
Monique Ponce spun past her defender and passed to Lowe, who's shot sailed wide again.
Madison Messier had a shot attempt in the 42nd minute blocked.
The first shot on goal came in the 59th minute when the Broncos' Tasha Inong reared back and fired but a sliding
Christina Holguin was there for the save. Holguin made another save on an Inong shot to the far post but Holguin was unable to get to her feet in time to save the putback by Aline Graham, whose goal gave Cal Poly Pomona a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.
By the end of 110 minutes, San Francisco State outshot Cal Poly Pomona 9-7 and put four on goal compared to three for CPP. Both teams attempted three corner kicks.
