WS | SF State fights to draw with CSUSB

SAN FRANCISCO — Junior Kelsie Bozart's first-half penalty kick helped the San Francisco State women's soccer team fight to a 1-1 double overtime draw versus Cal Poly State San Bernardino on Sunday at Cox Stadium.

"It was a typical Sunday game. It was physical and both teams had good chances," said San Francisco State Head Coach Tracy Hamm. "It was another battle of missed opportunities between both teams."

Cal State San Bernardino (6-8-2/4-6-1 CCAA) tallied 12 corner kicks in the match and used one to its advantage in the fourth minute. Rachel Figg played the ball in, then cut in and took a shot from the top right of the box. Her shot was blocked and deflected to the left, where Alexia Gonzalez shot and her shot deflected. The ball went to Sarah Bradley, who was able to tap the goal in on the right side.

In the 35th minute, Madison Alloway was taken down in the box going for a loose ball by Coyotes goalkeeper Destiny Collins. Both players were shaken up on the play and Alloway was helped off the field by the SF State training staff, though she did return for the second half. Junior Kelsie Bozart took the resulting penalty kick and froze goalkeeper Destiny Collins to tie the match at 1-1.

The two teams played to a draw over the next 75 minutes. The Gators had two shots on goal in the second half and two in double overtime, by Tami Kwong and Vanessa Penuna.

SF State now has 15 points in the standings with two matches to go. However, a wrinkle has been thrown into the standings. With the cancellation of soccer matches impacted by the recent wildfires in Northern California, the CCAA will use the average points per match to determine final seeding.

"I'm happy we were able to earn a point against a fresh team, but we really needed a win to put ourselves in a good place for playoffs," said Hamm.

The Gators host Humboldt State in a crucial matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at sfstategators.com. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
