SAN FRANCISCO — After a pair of 1-1 overtime matches, the San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped its third match of the four-match homestand on Wednesday, a costly 1-0 loss to Humboldt State.
A goal in the 87th minute by Humboldt State's Erin Siegel was the difference in the match. Both teams had plenty of opportunities with 15 shots apiece and the Gators (9-5-3/4-4-3) held a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
"We played tired. Coming off back to back double overtime games against fresh teams is difficult to do at this time in the season," said San Francisco State Head Coach
Tracy Hamm. "We gave it every everything we had. Humboldt State capitalized on a good chance. They really battled and earned the victory."
Vanessa Penuna's shot in the second minute was blocked. In the 12th minute,
Tami Kwong's shot went high.
Ana Williams' shot in the 35th minute was blocked, which resulted in a corner kick. That presented another chance for Kwong but her shot veered left. Penuna's shot shortly before the half was saved as well. The Gators fired off seven shots in the first 16 minutes of the second period but to no avail.
"We created some great chances early on," said Hamm. "Their keeper made some good saves and they came out on top."
Katelin Talbert made four stops to earn the shutout for the Lumberjacks (7-9-1/3-8-1 CCAA). Chrstina Holguin made five saves for SF State.
With the change to the standings shifting to a points-per-match average as a result of the cancellations after the North Bay fires, the playoff picture is quite complicated. The Gators, who sit in eighth place, will now need help to secure one of the top six seeds. They'll also have an uphill battle on Saturday, Oct. 28 when No. 19-ranked Sonoma State visits.
That day, the team will also help show its commitment to the fight against pediatric cancer as the Gators wear gold laces for Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer®, an initiative of Go4TheGoal®. To learn more, and to donate, visit

That match is also senior day for the Gators vs. Sonoma State. The Seawolves' seniors, as well as SF State seniors
