LA JOLLA, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw on Friday night in CCAA action at UC San Diego.
The Gators looked headed for a heartbreaker after
Malek Bashti scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Jonathan Sabouri and Jeff Powers. Bashti played a ball off of a cros from the right end line and tapped it in at close range into the empty net.
However, the Gators persevered. SF State, which attempted a season-high nine corner kicks in the contest, broke through on the team's seventh opportunity. Andy Altamirano's corner kick on the left side found Tariq Pulskamp, who headed in his third goal of the season into the bottom left corner.
The Gators kept pressing and had another corner kick in the final minute of regulation, and another in the second overtime period. UCSD also had a pair of corner kicks and a pair of shots on goal in overtime but the SF State defense preserved the draw and made two blocks. SF State goalkeeper
Kyle Harmina made four saves in 110 minutes of action.
"Tonight was a very tight game against a very good UCSD team and playing at their home is never easy," said Head Coach Javier Ayala-Hil. "They had some big plays but we answered with some big plays of our own so it's good that we got the tie on the road. I'm very proud of the way the team performed today."
In a fairly even match, UC San Diego held a slight 12-10 shot advantage and placed five shots on goal to the Gators' two.
The Gators (7-1-2/1-1-2 CCAA) now have eight points and remain very much in the hunt for the postseason with eight points. The Tritons (7-1-4/5-1-2 CCAA), who were tied with Chico State with 16 points apiece, move into sole possession for first place with the draw. SF State heads to Cal State San Marcos (2-7-2/0-6-1 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
