MS | Gators score twice to best CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team overcame an early deficit with a pair of unanswered goals en route to a 2-1 victory at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday in CCAA action.

Cal State San Marcos went up 1-0 in the 10th minute. David Martin found Parker Hodges with a loose ball inside the box and Hodges finished just under the crossbar. The lead stood until shortly before the end of the first half. In the 37th minute, the Gators scored off of the a deflected free kick. Aydan Bowers took Plantinos' free kick and finished to the bottom right corner for his second goal of the season, which tied the match at 1-1.

Plantinos netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season, which is second among CCAA players, in the 80th minute off of the assist from Richard Leon and Brandon Brunac for the game-winner.

"The team played very well today and gave a great effort. We went down early and stayed patient. We stuck to our game plan and were able to create opportunities," said SF State Head Coach Javier Ayala-Hil. "Ranier was able to get on frame and score so it's great to see him continue his play up front. Overall, it was a great performance by the team as a whole this weekend."

The Gators held a 6-4 shot on goal advantage and attempted 11 corner kicks to the Cougars' four. Freshman goalkeeper Peter Swinkels got the starting nod on Sunday and made three saves for his first collegiate win.

At the midway point of the conference schedule, the Gators (8-1-2/3-1-2 CCAA) moved into a tie for sixth place with Cal State LA (9-1-2/3-1-2 CCAA). The top six teams earn a berth to the CCAA Championships but SF State still has to face four teams currently ahead in the standings. Next up is a road match at fourth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-3-1/5-1-0 CCAA). The two teams will face off on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. The Gators return home on Friday, Oct. 20 at noon. The first 250 students at that day's doubleheader will receive a free SF State soccer scarf.
