NAMPA, Idaho — The San Francisco State men's basketball came up short in a race to the century mark, 102-97, versus Concordia (Ore.) on Friday night at the Johnson Sports Center.
Two minutes into play, the Gators (2-1) grabbed the lead. Seven minutes in, the lead stood at 10 thanks to a
Michael Diaz three-pointers. SF State's lead grew to as much as 11 after
Warren Jackson's three-pointer with 17:45 to go in the second half. However, the Cavaliers (3-0) answered with a 14-0 run that swung the lead to the Cavaliers, 64-61.
Ryne Williams answered with a three-pointer to even the game back just under the 15-minute mark but Christopher Edward's bucket a minute later gave the Cavaliers the lead for good. Concordia grew its lead to 11 with eight minutes to play but the Gators made it interesting in the final minute.
Brantley Bynum's putback dunk cut the lead to three with 24 seconds to go and kept things close with another three with 10 seconds to go. SF State was forced to foul and Cody Starr's free throws made it a two-point possession with eight seconds to go.
Bynum led the Gators with his double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds, both team highs.
Ryne Williams poured in a career-high 19 points with five three-pointers.
Warren Jackson added 17 points on 8-of-8 free throw shooting and dished out seven assists.
Evan Zeller added 12 points, five assists, and four steals and
Chiefy Ugbaja had 11 points in the loss. Both Zeller and Ugbaja fouled out.
The Gators sent the Cavaliers to the free throw 29 times, where they converted 21 attempts. SF State shot 22 free throws and converted 17.
Bryan Michaels led CU with a game-high 25 points. Jarrett Gray and Starr each had 22 points, and Starr tallied 10 assists for a double-double. Christopher Edwards scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Taylor Harris rounded out the Cavaliers in double digits with 13 points.
