MBB | Gators fall in double overtime

SAN FRANCISCO — Missed opportunities proved costly and the San Francisco State men's basketball team fell 86-82 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in double overtime on Saturday night.

The Gators (5-3/2-1 CCAA) trailed 36-31 at halftime, in large part due to a hot start by the Toros (4-6/2-2 CCAA), who began the game 4-of-5 from three-point land. The Gators shot 50 percent in the second half and held the Toros to 36 percent from the floor, including just 2-of-13 from deep. Warren Jackson's layup with a minute left in regulation put the Gators up 62-60. Deshay Gipson missed a pair of free throws but an offensive foul turned the ball back to CSUDH with 18 seconds left, which set up a game-tying basket for Jonathon Nichols that sent the game into overtime.

Nichols made the second of two free throws to begin overtime but the Gators answered with a Chiefy Ugbaja layup from Jash Kahlon, who hit a three-pointer on the next trip down that put the Gators up four. A Brantley Bynum free throw put the Gators up six with 19 seconds to go but Glenn Baral made it a three-pointer with 10 seconds to go to cut the lead to three. A Kenny Macklin free throw pushed the lead to 75-71 with five seconds left but Bynum's fifth foul with .3 seconds left on the clock. Nichols made both of his free throws, then the Gators turned the ball over with an errant inbounds pass that sailed out on the sideline without contact. That set up a play under the basket for the Toros and freshman Malcolm Johnson's tip-in from Matt Hayes forced a second overtime, 75-75.

The Toros jumped out to a four-point lead in double overtime, though the Gators came back yet again and took the lead, 80-79, with 2:47 on a pair of Jackson free throws. A Jackson layup with 1:27 to go made it a three-point lead. Gabriel Hicks, who was pressed into action for the Toros after Nichols and Gipson fouled out, answered with a three at the other end to tie it 82-82. Hicks hit another three to put the Toros up for good and Johnson made one of two free throws with three seconds left to ice the game.

Jackson led all players with a season-high 25 points and added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Ugbaja scored 16 points and Bynum scored 13 points. Kahlon added a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Evan Zeller added 10 points.

Johnson led the Toros with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Nichols and Gipson each added a dozen points. Matt Hayes scored 11 points and Hicks scored six points in seven minutes.
