SAN FRANCISCO – Riding a massive run after halftime, the San Francisco State women's basketball team held on for their biggest win of the season, defeating visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 73-68. Three Gators finished in double figures and were led by
Jasmine Black's career-high 22 points.
SF State (3-21/1-16 CCAA) got back into the win column on the strength of their play from inside the arc. The Gators shot a season-high 47.6 percent from the field, going 30-for-63. In the paint the Gators outscored the Toros 34-32. After the intermission, SF State shot 51.5 percent from the floor, going 17-for-33.
"We played really well for most of the game tonight," said head coach
Dennis Cox. "I was proud of how hard we fought to build the big lead. Donae was huge inside and Erika and Jasmine played their best games as Gators."
Three players finished in double figures for SF State, led by Black's 22. Joining her in double figures was
Erika Nilsen and
Donae Moguel. Moguel finished with her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Nilsen Found her stroke from deep, finishing 3-for-4 from long range, and was 6-for-9 from the field for 15 points. She also tallied eight rebounds.
The Gators led for 35 minutes of tonight's contest. They scored first on a steal in the open court that led to a Black layup. From there, SF State went on a 10-4 run, going up 12-4 over the first five and a half minutes.
The Toros (6-18/3-14 CCAA) went on a run of their own, eventually taking a one-point lead, 17-16 with 4:59 left in the second quarter. From there, SF State closed out the half on a 13-6 run to go into the break up 29-26. During that stretch, the trio of Black, Moguel and Nilsen combined to score all 13 of SF State's points.
Out of the break the Gators began a monstrous second half. SF State scored a season-high 44 points after the break. A 21-5 run in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter had the Gators up big. SF State increased their lead to a game-high 21-point lead with 3:39 in the fourth quarter on a 3-point bucket by Black.
The Toros would not go down quietly, led by Simone Thompson, CSUDH went on an 18-5 run over the final 3:01 to cut the deficit to five points. Thompson finished with a game-high 24 points.
The Gators will return to action tomorrow night when they host Cal State L.A. Tip-off for that game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
