SF State knocks off nationally-ranked Chico State

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State University men's basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Chico State with a 65-51 victory over the No. 20-ranked Wildcats on Saturday in The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.

The win was the 100th career victory for seventh year Head Coach Paul Trevor. Trevor becomes the fourth SF State men's basketball coach to reach the 100-win plateau, and is the fastest coach in SF State history to achieve 100 career wins. SF State's first head coach, Dan Farmer, who led SF State from 1932-57, holds the all-time wins record with a 357-211 overall mark.

Saturday's win also moves SF State (17-3/11-3 CCAA) into a tie for second place with the Wildcats. UC San Diego (17-5/12-3 CCAA) remains in first place in the CCAA by half a game with Saturday's blowout win over Cal State East Bay (12-12/7-8 CCAA).

The Gators, who are second in the nation in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage defense (38.3 percent), held a Chico State (18-5/11-4 CCAA) squad that entered the night averaging 47.1 percent from the field and 76.6 points per game to just points on 25.9 shooting in the first half.  SF State led by as many as 11, though the Wildcats closed out the half on a five-point run.

SF State led wire-to-wire and offset seven Chico State three-pointers, five in the second half, with an efficient 50.0 percent shooting that resulted in as large as a 17-point lead. Warren Jackson scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Israel Hakim came off the bench for 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Chiefy Ugbaja added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, seven of which were at the offensive end.

Only five Chico State players registered a field goal. The Wildcats were led by Jalen McFerren's 17 points on 5-of-12 three-point shooting. Corey Silverstrom added 14 points. Justin Briggs came off the bench for nine points.
