SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader with Stanislaus State. The Gators won game one 12-5 and dropped the nightcap 8-2.
In game one, SF State (4-16/2-10 CCAA) overcame an early 2-0 deficit thanks to 13 hits and a pair of crooked innings in the second and fourth innings. In the bottom of the second,
Trevor Greenley drew a two-out walk, then stole second.
Dalton Pizzuti plated Greenley with a single to right field.
Zac Neumann kept the inning going with another walk and
Connor Fidone singled. An errant throw on the play allowed Pizzuti to score and the tie game.
Jackson Kritsch drew the Gators' third walk off the inning and
Jordan Abernathy gave SF State a 4-2 lead with a two-run single up the middle.
With two outs in the third, SF State starter
Brent Montgomery issued three consecutive walks, the third which walked in a run.
Garrett Ciuk entered in relief and induced a flyout to get out of the inning, then pitched a perfect fourth. Ciuk earned his first win of the season with three and a third innings of work.
In the fourth inning, Abernathy blew the game open with a two-out, bases-clearing double. He moved to third on the throw home, then scrambled home and scored on the errant throw to back to third from catcher Ethan Utler.
Chris Nicholson capped off the inning with a solo shot left center, his second on the year.
Nicholson led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and scored when
Bryce Brooks laid down a sac bunt. A throwing error allowed Brooks to reach base safely and Nicholson scored from second. SF State used another two-out rally in the eighth to extend the lead. Kritsch singled and stole second, Abernathy and Nicholson both walked, and Brooks plated a pair with his single to left field.
Cy Vojak earned the save with three innings of one-hit ball. Robbie DeVries (0-2) took the loss for the Warriors (15-8/5-7 CCAA).
In game two, the Warriors staked a 6-0 lead with runs in three of the first five innings. Abernathy drove in another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, though the Gators gave those runs back in the top of the seventh.
Allen Ressler (0-1) took the loss in game two.
Brett Elgin and
Grant Vogenthaler both pitched scoreless innings of relief. Cody Kruip (2-2) tossed five innings of six-hit ball for Stan State in game two. Ian Chandler threw two innings of scoreless relief for the Warriors.
Abernathy finished the day 4-for-7 with two doubles, five runs batted in, a pair of runs, and a walk. Nicholson went 3-for-7 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
The Gators dropped both of Saturday's games with the Warriors and lost the season series 3-1. SF State will now face nationally-ranked UC San Diego on Thursday, March 16 at 2 p.m. and Friday, March 17 at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
