SB | Gators rebound to take game two, split with Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. – After being held to two runs on eight hits in the opener, the San Francisco State softball team flipped the script on host Stanislaus State, taking game two of the doubleheader 6-4 to draw a Friday evening split.

A four run top of the fifth proved to be the difference as SF State (9-17/8-14 CCAA) slugged 12 hits, three of them doubles in the nightcap.  Stanislaus State (9-17/8-12) was not able to get the clutch 2-out hit they needed, as they had in the first game of the series.

In game one, the Warriors struck first, two bunts and an infield single back to the pitcher plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning.  The Gators did not look sharp on defense early on, a wild pitch put runners at second and third with no outs.  After a base hit, Megan Clark (5-9) got what she needed, a double play and a routine ground ball to second ended the Warriors threat, limiting them to three runs.

In the top of the second the Gators got on the board in a big way.  Sitting on a 1-0 offering, Kasie Trezona smashed a ball over the left field fence for a solo home run, her third long ball of the year. It was the start of a big day for Trezona.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Warriors added to their total.  Clark could not get the second out she desperately needed, as Stanislaus State took a four-run lead on a two-out two-run double from Cassidy Duke.

With two outs in the top of the third it was Sara Higa's turn to leave earth.  The first baseman launched a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for her fourth home run of the year.  The Gators threatened to score more, but stranded runners at second and third to end the threat.

The Warriors put the game away, scoring a run in the fourth and the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Clark went the distance, throwing 6.0 complete, 10 hits allowed, seven runs earned, with two walks and two strike outs.

In the nightcap, the Gators scored a run in the second and the third.  But in both innings the Warriors responded with a run of their own to tie it up.  Stanislaus State took a 4-2 lead following a two run bottom of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth inning the Gators bats came to life.  SF State scored four runs on five hits.  The big hit a two-run double by Trezona that plated two runs to put the Gators out front 5-4.  Madison Collins switched places with Trezona one batter later with a RBI double of her own to give the Gators a 6-4 advantage.

Cassidy (3-8) got the shutdown inning she desperately needed, stranding runners at second and third in the bottom of the fifth, getting a weakly hit ground ball back to the pitcher for the final out.  She closed out the game getting the Warriors to go down quietly for the win.

Her line for the game: seven complete, seven hits allowed four runs, two earned with two walks and four strike outs.

Celeste Adriano, Aryn Guzman, Clark and Collins all collected multiple hits, with Clark, Trezona and Collins driving in two apiece.  With her single in the top of the fifth Adriano extended her hitting streak to a team-high 14 games.

The Gators and the Warriors will wrap up the series tomorrow, with game one of the doubleheader scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
