BB | SF State shuts out Cougars in rubber game of series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team received a solid pitching effort from starer Dillon Houser and took the rubber game of the series with a 3-0 shutout at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday.

The Gators (6-20/4-14 CCAA) struck first in the fourth inning. SF State took advantage of a Cougars (13-15/3-13 CCAA) error that kept the frame alive and led to second baseman Zac Neumann's bloop single, which was enough to score Myles Franklin. The run was all that Houser (1-5) needed for his first win of the season and what was by far his best outing of the season. The lefty scattered three hits, struck out six, and faced just two over the minimum in six innings of work.

Freshman outfielder Jack Harris drove in the Gators' other two runs. He doubled the lead in the sixth with an RBI double off the left field fence that scored Bryce Brooks. In the eighth, Harris drove home Brooks all the way from first with an RBI triple to left center.

The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the eighth inning but reliever Matthew Hernandez induced a groundout. Jacob Lopez robbed Tyler Place, who entered the day batting a team-leading .402, of a hit for the third out to keep the Cougars scoreless. Hernandez allowed just two hits in three shutout innings and earned his first save of the season.

Harris finished his day 3-for-4 and went 5-for-7 in the series. Bryce Brooks finished his day 2-for-4. Four other Gators recorded a hit on the day. The Gators did not record an error for the fifth time this season. Cougars starter Alex Wall (2-3) allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings of work.
