SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The No. 19 San Francisco State men's basketball team fell 78-63 to top-seeded UC San Diego in the championship game of the 2017 CCAA Men's Basketball Tournament presented by Gearboss on Saturday at the Sports Center.
Shots simply didn't fall for the Gators (25-5), who went scoreless for six minutes in the second half, and shot just 37 percent (20-of-54) for the game. UC San Diego (25-5) couldn't miss and shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field.
Gators missed their first five three-pointers until
Ryne Williams hit successive threes for the Gators. The Tritons responded with a seven-point run to take an early 12-point lead. Senior
Derrick Brown came off the bench and sparked the Gators with two quick threes and a three-point play that cut the lead in half. Another Brown step-back three cut the lead to five at the five-minute mark.
Warren Jackson's first basket came at the four-minute mark, a floater that beat the shot clock and cut the lead to three.
AJ Kahlon's post move with 2:10 to go gave the Gators their first lead of the night, 37-36. The Tritons scored the last five points of the half and took a 41-36 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Aleks Lipovic hit back-to-back threes that pushed the Tritons lead to its largest of the night, 14. A Christian Oshita backdoor followed with a three-point play that extended the lead to 17.
Coley Apsay's corner three finally ended a six-minute scoring drought that saw the Tritons go on a 15-0 run and trimmed the lead to 63-49. The Gators would get no closer than 11 points.
Coley Apsay scored a team-high 14 points. Brown finished with 13 points. Jackson was held to 10 points, his lowest output since Jan. 7, and dished out four assists.
AJ Kahlon had six points and a team-high seven rebounds. After the game, Apsay and
AJ Kahlon were named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.
The Tritons shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) and had 15 three-pointers. Lipovic and Adam Klie, the CCAA Player of the Year, both finished with 18 points apiece. Christian Oshita finished with 15 points. They coveted the Gators' 10 turnovers into 13 points.
