INDIANAPOLIS — For the first time since the 1993-94 season, the San Francisco State men's basketball team is headed to the big dance. The No. 19-ranked Gators will face No. 8 California Baptist in the first round matchup of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball West Regional on Friday, March 10 at 5 p.m.
The Gators received the No. 5 seed while the Lancers received the No. 4 seed. Both teams have 25 wins this season, though SF State has one more loss than CBU. SF State finished second in the CCAA and reached the CCAA Tournament Championship game, where the Gators fell to regular-season champion UC San Diego. The Lancers finished second in the PacWest regular season and received a first-round bye in the PacWest Championships but fell to Point Loma, who also defeated CBU in the last game of the regular season.
The Gators are enjoying their best season in the modern era. SF State has appeared in the NABC poll in all but two weeks of the season, reaching as high as No. 13. The Gators appeared in the poll for seven consecutive weeks beginning Dec. 6. Seventh-year Head Coach
Paul Trevor reached the 100-win mark in a win over then-No. 20 Chico State and was the fastest coach in program history to do so. Four players earned All-CCAA honors:
Warren Jackson and
Coley Apsay earned First Team honors,
AJ Kahlon earned Second Team honors, and
Nick Calcaterra earned Honorable Mention.
UC San Diego received the No. 1 seed in the West Region and will also host the regional at RIMAC Arena. Game tickets will be available for purchase at RIMAC Arena one hour prior to the start of the first game each day. All tickets are general admission. Adults (18-64) are $10; students, seniors (65+), and youth (7-17) are $5; and children under 7 are free. Games will also be broadcast for free on
