PORTLAND, Ore. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team got the 2017 season off to a winning start on Thursday with a 5-2 win over Saint Martin's at Tuominyen Yard.
Quick back-to-back goals put the Gators (1-0) in the driver's seat early. In the 11th minute, senior
Ranier Plantinos scored the team's first goal of the season on a cross from senior
KJ Ahlo from five yards out. Five minutes later, junior transfer
Tariq Pulskamp played the ball to junior
Sam Gebremiche, who finished into the top right of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore
Richard Leon, last season's CCAA men's soccer freshman of the year, scored on a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Saint Martin's (0-1) trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the 24th minute with his shot from 10 yards out.
Ahlo put SF State back up by three in the 48th minute. He played a ball from Leon to Gebremiche, who passed to Ahlo from five yards out. However, a defensive miscue less than a minute later allowed Edgar Iniguez to score off a bad pass and made it 4-2.
Plantinos, who tallied four goals a year ago, finished his day with a pair thanks to his shot in the 86th minute that found the back of the net.
The Gators return to action on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Concordia (Ore.) at 1:30 p.m. The Cavaliers, who went 4-10-3 last season, are picked to finish last in the seven-team GNAC. Live stats and video will be provided by Concordia.
