WS | Gators go to double overtime, fall late in season opener

PORTLAND, Ore. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team went to double overtime in its first match of the season but came away with a 2-1 loss to host Concordia (Ore.) on Thursday night at Tuominen Yard.

After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers (1-0), tabbed to finish third in the GNAC, took the early lead in the 72nd minute. McKenna Stocker's cross into Alaina Edgerly for the shot from five yards out made it 1-0 but 43 seconds later, the Gators (0-1) countered with a goal of their own. Vanessa Penuna played a cross to senior Laura Shea from deep in the right corner and Shea buried the 10-yarder to tie the match at 1-1.

The two teams battled into double overtime but the Cavaliers found the back of the net with just over six minutes remaining in double overtime. Jennifer Aguirre passed to Quinn Williams and the back line was unable to stop the attack, resulting in the golden goal for the home team.

Concordia held a slight 15-14 shot advantage and both teams had four shots on goal. SF State freshman goalkeeper Nicki Rucki made a pair of saves in her first collegiate start while Anna Miller had three for the Cavaliers.

SF State will look for its first win of the season on Saturday versus Western Oregon, which is picked to finish eighth in the nine-team GNAC. That match, originally scheduled for WOU's home field, has been moved to nearby Central High School in Independence, Oregon. Kickoff of the non-conference contest is slated for 1 p.m.
