SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team improved to a perfect 5-0-0 mark on Sunday and matched the best start in program history with a 5-0 victory over Academy of Art
at Negoesco Stadium on the USF campus in the final match of the Golden Gate Classic.
The five consecutive wins to open the season match the program's best start in the 75-season history of SF State men's soccer, set in 1968. That season's team went on to go 9-1 overall and an undefeated 7-0 in conference play en route to the Far Western Conference Championship. Through the first five matches this season, the 2017 SF State squad has outscored opponents 19-5 and outshot them 82-60. Forty-three of SF State's shots have been on frame.
"The team played very well today collectively as a unit," said second year Head Coach
Javier Ayala-Hil. "Guys are buying into what we want to do as a team and it's great to see a lot of different players contributing at both ends of the field."
SF State, which received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, outshot Academy of Art (0-2-1) 19-9 and had as many shots on goal as ART U did total shots. The Gators set the tone in the 6th minute when Jonny Villeda crossed a ball into Ranier Plantinos, where the senior scored from the middle of the box for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Tariq Pulskamp, who scored the game-winner in Friday's 4-3 overtime victory over Holy Names, doubled the lead in the 16th minute when he scored off of a free kick from Andy Altamirano.
Nigus Solomon's shot in the 32nd minute was blocked but Richard Leon was there for the rebound and the putback and the Gators led 3-0 by halftime.
In the 54th minute, Miles Burditt crossed the ball into the center of the box, where Villeda scored a goal of his own. Leon put the match well out of reach with second goal of the day in the 68th minute, off of the assist from KJ Ahlo.
Four teams participated in the Golden Gate Classic — host ART U, Holy Names, Humboldt State, and SF State. Four Gators were named to All-Tournament Team: Plantinos (four goals), Leon (two goals), Pulskamp (two goals), and Burditt (two assists). Plantinos, who recorded his first career hat trick on Friday, was named Tournament MVP for his four-goal weekend.
SF State will have some to rest up before delving into CCAA action. The Gators head to Chico State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
