Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Davis

MS | Historic start comes to end in conference opener

CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team entered CCAA play at a perfect 5-0-0, matching the best start in the program's 75-year history. Unfortunately, the Gators won't go undefeated in conference play after dropping Friday's conference opener 1-0 at Chico State.

It was a heartbreaking first loss for the Gators (5-1-0/0-1-0 CCAA), who saw Chico State (6-2-0/4-0-0 CCAA) score in the 80th minute. Eruvey Arceta and Jeremiah Egujie assisted on the header by Fabian Roman, who netted the game-winner.

For just the second time this season, the Gators were outshot, 24-10, and 10-4 on goal. The Wildcats also held an 8-3 corner kick advantage. Senior Ranier Plantinos, who tallied seven goals through his first five matches, led SF State with two shots, one on goal. Despite allowing the goal, sophomore Kyle Harmina recorded a career-high nine saves, which is tied for fourth most in a single match in program history.

"Obviously it was a tough loss, giving a goal that late in the game. It's a long process, and we're going to move on from it," said SF State Head Coach Javier Ayala-Hil. "We'll learn from tonight's game but there are plenty of games to still play. Guys are going to recover and get ready for Sunday's match, we're looking forward to it."

SF State will have a quick turnaround with an 11:30 a.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 24 at Stanislaus State (2-3-2/0-2-1 CCAA). Live stats and video will be provided by the Wildcats. In-game scoring updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_msoc.
