WS | Gators displays depth in victory over Bridgeport

SAN FRANCISCO — In a battle of purple, San Francisco State came out victorious, 3-0, on Monday afternoon at Cox Stadium versus visiting Bridgeport.

SF State (3-1-0), in purple from head to toe, set the tone early with two goals versus the black-clad Purple Knights, who went 18-4 a year ago and were the No. 7-ranked team in the country. Senior Vanessa Penuna, the SF State Female Student-Athlete of the Week after scoring the game-winner in last week's win over NNU, picked up a pair of assists. In the 16th minute, Penuna took control of the ball near the midfield and dribbled down the right side of the field. She cut in towards the goal and crossed the ball from the outside of the penalty box into fellow senior Laura Shea, who connected at the top of the goal box for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

In a similar sequence, Penuna played another ball in the 32nd minute a little further out and punted the ball near the penalty mark, where Samantha Craig connected with a header that sent SF State into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The Gators allowed few connected passes by BU (1-3-1) and dominated possession throughout the match. Twenty-one of SF State's 28 players saw the field. Freshman Madison Alloway came off the bench and added a goal in the 89th minute on a 1v1 from the right side for her first career goal.

Senior goalkeeper Christina Holguin made three saves and recorded the shutout for the Gators.

"I was really happy with today's performance. We stuck to the game plan and it was a great team win, I'm really proud of the way we played" said Head Coach Tracy Hamm. "Going into the game, I was hoping that we could find a way to get some of our bench players a lot of minutes. We have three games this week and we have a lot of depth and a lot of talent so it was a great opportunity to get the whole team involved."

SF State hosts Academy of Art on Wednesday, Sept. 13 and Holy Names on Saturday, Sept. 16. Both matches kickoff at 1 p.m. and will have live video and stats available at sfstategators.com. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
