WS | SF State capitalizes on second chance opportunities

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team recorded its third shutout of the young season on Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over Academy of Art on a foggy and misty afternoon at Cox Stadium.
SF State (4-1-0) dominated possession and outshot ART U (0-3-1) 24-9 with nine shots on goal. The Gators attacked time and time again, and in the 18th minute broke through with the first goal of the day. Freshman Ana Williams intercepted a pass just past midfield and sent it to the SF State half of the field. Senior Laura Shea tracked it down on the right side of the box and fired to the far post. ART U goalkeeper Maggie Alikpala was there for the diving save but Bianca Lowe followed on the left side for an easy look for her second goal of the season.

In the 22nd minute, Niko Baila's throw-in led to a cross from Vanessa Penuna. The ball deflected out to the top of the circle, where Ally King fired and had her shot saved. Alikpala made another diving save but this time freshman Tami Kwong was on the left side for the easy tap in to the near post and her second goal of the season.

The Gators were whistled for 11 fouls, two of which set up free kicks for the Urban Knights. Alice Michell's first free kick in the 69th minute slammed off the post and her next attempt sailed wide out of play. Senior Christina Holguin stopped all four balls that came her direction for her second win and shutout of the season.

"We talked about adjusting to the weather conditions and one of the points we made was to follow all of our shots. We were fortunate to finish two chances off rebounds," said Head Coach Tracy Hamm. "Academy of Art had two really good chances, especially on their free kick. We were lucky to get away with a shutout but it was another great team effort. A lot of players got a lot of minutes and we kept the level the same regardless of the changes made."

SF State wraps up non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. versus Holy Names . Live video and stats will be available at sfstategators.com. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
