WS | SF State finishes non-conference schedule with fifth straight win

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team won its fifth straight match with a 1-0 victory over Holy Names on Saturday afternoon at Cox Stadium.

The Gators have been dominant in their first six matches, having outshot opponents 93-48 while allowing just 19 shots on goal, and outscored them 13-3. The Gators are averaging 15.5 shots per match and have allowed just one goal during their win streak. Five different players have scored this week, which saw the Gators go a perfect 3-0 at home.

"It's difficult to play three matches in six days but we found a way to win," said Head Coach Tracy Hamm. "I'm proud of our team and we look forward to the challenge of conference play."

SF State went up 1-0 in the 10th minute on senior redshirt Bianca Lowe's third goal of the season. Vanessa Penuna played a ball from the midfield forward to Laura Shea, who played the ball back to Samantha Craig, whose cross from the far right wing landed in the box. HNU goalkeeper Jaclyn Arballo dove forward to no avail and Lowe, who scored the game winner in Thursday's 2-0 victory over Academy of Art, finished to the near post.

Tami Kwong nearly doubled the Gators' lead in the 41st minute but her shot into an open net was just soft enough to allow an HNU defender to get a foot in for a block.

SF State kept the HNU offense in check, allowing only four total shots by the Hawks and none on goal. All four HNU shots were attempted by senior Shelby Johnson.

SF State will begin the 2017 CCAA schedule on the road. The Gators are under the lights at Chico State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., then head to Stanislaus State for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 24. SF State returns home on Friday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. vs. Cal State East Bay. Live stats and video will be provided by the host institutions. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
