WS | Win streak snapped at five by Chico State

CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team saw its five match win streak come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, allowing a Chico State goal in the final five minutes for a 1-0 loss in Friday's 2017 CCAA opener.

Both Gators losses have gone down to the wire – SF State (5-2-0/0-1-0 CCAA) lost the season opener 1-0 in overtime. On Friday, SF State looked headed to another overtime affair but Lia Kilgore and Sarah Emigh setup Pooja Patel's second goal of the season for the host Wildcats (4-0-0/2-2-0 CCAA). In the 87th minute, Emigh came up with a takeaway, then quickly countered to Kilgore, who passed ahead to Patel. Pate's shot from 20 yards found the lower right corner past SF State goalkeeper Christina Holguin.

For the first time this season, SF State found the opponent dominating possession. The Gators were outshot 17-6 and were limited to one shot on goal, a Laura Shea shot that was saved in the 58th minute. Chico State also held a 6-3 corner kick advantage. SF State was whistled for 10 fouls compared to seven on Chico State.

"Tonight was a physical battle. Both teams played hard but Chico State earned the win," said SF State Head Coach Tracy Hamm. "It's a tough place to play. We couldn't match their intensity and they capitalized on a mistake. There were some great individual performances but we lacked some chemistry as a team. We know what we need to do moving forward.

The Gators will look to bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Stanislaus State (5-3-0/0-3-0 CCAA). Live stats and video will be provided by the Warriors. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
