WS | SF State remains unbeaten at home

SAN FRANCISCO — Freshman Tami Kwong scored both goals for the San Francisco State women's soccer team as the Gators returned home to the friendly confines of Cox Stadium for a 2-0 victory over Cal State East Bay. The Gators have now won all five of their home matches this season and notched their first CCAA victory of the season.

"I'm really proud of Tami, she's come up big a couple of times for us now," said Head Coach Tracy Hamm of her freshman's performance. "It's great to see that type of tenacity out of a freshman."

Kwong flashed some fancy footwork with her first goal. The freshman spun past her defender, drove right straight for the box, which drew goalkeeper Ina Gonzalez out from the goal line. Kwong then finished to the far post for the early Gators lead.
SF State's second goal game in the 59th minute when senior Laura Shea played a ball in from the right side into Kwong, whose first shot was blocked but she found the back of the net the second time as the ball skipped past the Pioneers defense.

The Gators managed the shutout despite several opportunities for the Pioneers. A failed clearance off of a corner kick resulted in Monique Ponce falling on the ball being whistled for a foul at the top of the box. The Pioneers held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and played several dangerous balls into the box. Senior goalkeeper Christa Holguin picked up her fourth win of the year while freshman Nicki Rucki completed the shutout with the final 10 minutes of action.

"We generated some really good chances and I'm happy with the shutout," added Hamm. "We were able to get a lot of players into the game so we can have fresh legs on Sunday."

SF State is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. versus Cal State Monterey Bay. Live video and stats will be available at sfstategators.com. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
