MS | Gators off to best start since 1968

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team overcame two deficits to force overtime, where they won 4-3 versus Holy Names on Friday at Beach Chalet Field.

SF State (4-0-0), which received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, are off to a 4-0 start, the program's best start since 1968. That season's team won its first five matches and went on to go 9-1 overall and an undefeated 7-0 en route to the Far Western Conference Championship.

Ranier Plantinos' first career hat trick powered the Gators through the first 90 minutes. After Holy Names (0-2) caught the Gators off guard in the fourth minute with a goal that went over the SF State defense and took an early lead, the senior evened the game in the fifth minute on a pass from Jesse Rodriguez.

Miles Burditt connected with Plantinos in the 25th minute and SF State headed into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Gators outshot HNU 28-18, including 14-6 on frame, but a flurry of action from the Hawks put HNU back ahead. Hernan Mercado netted the game-tying goal in the 58th minute and Yohannes Harish gave the Hawks a late lead with his unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.

Plantinos' third goal in the 76th minute knotted the match yet again and sent the match to overtime. Plantinos leads the Gators with six goals already this season and is ranked among the Top 10 in total goals.

In the 98th minute, Andy Altamirano's corner kick from the left side found Tariq Pulskamp, who headed it dead center from point-blank range for the game-winner.

"We're not always going to play the way we like to. Holy Names pressed and tactically made adjustments and we had to adapt," said SF State Head Coach Javier Ayala-Hil. "Fortunately our guys were resilient throughout the entire match. We created a lot of opportunities and we had some players come up big."

The Gators will look to keep up their hot start on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. versus Academy of Art at Negoesco Stadium on the USF campus. Live stats and video will be provided by ART U. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at @sfstate_msoc.
