SF State drops home contest to Cal State Monterey Bay, 73-47

SAN FRANCISCO – The struggles continued for the San Francisco State women's basketball team, which dropped its Saturday contest to the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 73-47.

Jhaina Stephens scored 12 points and recorded four rebounds while Tyiteyana Jefferson joined her in the double-digit category with 11 points and eight boards. Jacqueline Moss and Amani Alexander each had seven points and Rachel Iozzia hit a pair of threes for six points in 39 minutes played. Kaleigh Pugh rounded out the scoring with four points and logged five boards.

Monterey Bay (5-14/4-10 CCAA) had five runs of seven points or more in the contest en route to the victory. The Otters shot 47 percent (27-of-57) from the field, their best of the season, and held the 43-25 rebound advantage.

The Otters came out to a 7-0 lead before Iozzia dished to a streaking Stephens in the paint who finished with a layup to put the shorthanded Gators (4-13/2-12 CCAA) on the board. With 4:41 remaining in the period, Iozza drained one from deep off an assist from Moss to cut it to four, and, following a Courtney Keaton Jumper, Alexander got her first points of the night to make it 11-7. The Otters got a three from Jessie Evans with two seconds remaining in the first to take a 22-13 advantage into the next period.

Monterey Bay began the second with another run, this time of 11 points to go up 33-13 with just under three minutes left in the half. Pugh ended the streak with a jumper in the paint to get in the scoring line, which proved to be the only points for SF State in the second quarter. The visitors then scored eight more to carry a 41-15 lead into the half.

Moss hit a jumper and Pugh followed with a layup in the lane to cut it to 46-19. Jefferson continued the surge with a basket of her own at the midway mark, however the Otters continued their strong offensive showing with another 7-0 run that Alexander ended with a layup at the 2:18 mark.

Trailing 60-23, Jefferson picked up the offensive board and hit a layup, and Moss continued the momentum with a contested bucket and the foul. The Gators never backed down despite the score, and with just under five minutes left in regulation, Jefferson grabbed another offensive board and finished, closing out the play with the and-one free throw.  The closing minutes featured Stephens battling for a layup, Moss hitting one from beyond and Stephens hitting another layup, bringing the score to 72-40. Alexander capped off the scoring with a layup as the score sat 73-47.
