SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State volleyball team capped off its stellar weekend with its second sweep in just as many days as the Gators took down visiting Sonoma State, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19.
- It is SF State's (10-7/5-5 CCAA) first victory over Sonoma State (8-11/4-6 CCAA) since 2014 and their first-ever sweep over the Seawolves in program history.
- The sweep is the eighth of the season, and fourth time they have swept in back-to-back contests.
- The win gives the Gators their most overall wins and most CCAA victories since the 2015 campaign.
- The Gators hit .315 in the match, hitting above .300 for the second-straight match. They also held Sonoma State to a .193 hitting mark, and held the 50-39 kill advantage.
- Olivia Tabron hit .419 with a career-high 16 kills while adding seven total blocks. Bailey Johnson recorded a .643 hitting percentage in 14 attempts with nine kills.
- Jessica Haynie added 12 kills and a pair of digs. Drew Morris poured in 11 kills and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Payton Jensen led all players with 40 assists.
Morris pounded in an kill to the middle of the court, giving the Gators a 6-3 lead. Haynie, Jensen and Johnson notched consecutive swings to continue the rally and extend the lead to six. The Seawolves stormed back to cut it to two after a kill by Amy Trephan that capped off a 3-0 run. Tabron gave SF State a 21-17 lead with another swing to the corner off a dish by Jensen. Leading 24-21, Jensen gave Tabron a nice set piece to the end of the net and the senior dropped it in for the set one win.
Haynie kicked off the second set with a kill that nicked the back line and Tabron followed with another swing to make it 2-0. Emily Eaton gave Sonoma State it's first lead of the night, 7-6, with a swing. Down 11-10, Morris recorded her eighth kill of the contest and Haynie followed with back-to-back service aces to regain the Purple and Gold advantage and prompt a visitor timeout. SF State went back up by three, 16-13, and Maura Donovan added another to the scoreboard with an ace. A 3-0 run by the Seawolves tied it up at 20-all, and Sonoma State later took a 23-22 lead following a pair of kills by Tate Battisitini. Johnson and Tabron tied it up once again out of the break with a block, and Johnson gave the hosts set point with a kill to the middle. The junior capped off the win with her sixth kill for the 25-23 win.
Jensen's ace gave SF State a 3-0 lead in the third. Tabron's swing started a 4-0 Gator run, which featured a block by Tabron and Marlena Billings and a Morris swing as SF State pushed their lead to 7-2. The rally continued as Haynie notched an ace to extend the lead to six. Tabron and Billings teamed up for another big block at the net, making it a 15-11 lead, and the hosts got three-straight points on another Tabron swing and pair of Seawolf errors to go up six. Morris wrapped up the 5-0 with a solo block as the Gators reached the 20-point plateau to lead by eight. Haynie gave SF State match point after a marathon rally between both teams, and she later put the match away with her 12th and final kill for the sweep.
SF State hits the road against Cal State East Bay on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. Live stats will be provided. The Gators will then trek to Seaside, California on Friday, October 12 to battle Cal State Monterey Bay.
