BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team opened the season with a tri-dual versus Division I Cal State Bakersfield and NAIA Life Pacific. The Gators cruised to a 37-6 win over Life Pacific, an NAIA program is in its first year, then struggled in a 34-3 loss to Division I Cal State Bakersfield team which boasts a pair of two-time NCAA qualifiers in Sean Nickell (133) and Russell Rohlfing (149).
Angelo Reyes (125) and
Maxamillian Schneider (165) earned six points apiece with falls of their Warriors opponents.
Isiah Alva (149),
Romeo Medina-Ontiveros (157),
Kurtis Clem (174), and
Justin Pichedwatana (184) all won by major decision. Schneider recorded the only victory versus Cal State Bakersfield with a 13-9 decision over Jacob Thalin.
Head Coach Jason Welch: "Today was a good start for us. It's great to get out of our room and scrap against other people. We know what we need to work on now, and it's going to be a great year."
Next Saturday, November 10, San Francisco State will head to Stanford for a 3:30 p.m. match. The match will be held outdoors as part of Football Fan Fest.
