SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning but a run in the ninth was the difference in a 3-2 to loss to Stanislaus State on Sunday.
With the win, the Warriors (8-4/4-2 CCAA) took the series 3-1 from SF State (3-10/3-5 CCAA).
A hit batter and walk with two outs proved costly in the ninth, as it allowed the inning to stay alive. Andrew Renteria made the Gators pay with a single through the left side that gave the Warriors the lead for good, 3-2.
The Gators tied it in the eighth on
Damon DeVirgilio's two-out, pinch-hit single to right field which scored
Brady Dorn.
Stanislaus State took the lead in the first. Braeden Oki doubled and scored on an error, which also allowed Jack Large to reach safely at first. The Gators threatened in the bottom half of the first but left a pair in scoring position.
Jarrett Veiga's solo shot to right field doubled the lead in the fourth but SF State got the run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Jack Harris led off with a single and advanced to third on Dorn's tomahawk single through the right side. Harris scored on
Jordan Abernathy's sac fly. The Gators proceeded to load the bases but failed to take advantage.
Both starters settled for no-decisions.
Jeff Piver worked into the seventh inning for the Gators. He faced seven over the minimum, thanks in part to a a successful pickoff and a pair of runners caught stealing by batterymate
Jason Hare. Piver struck out the side in the seventh and fanned six total.
Warriors starter Ryan Paramo scattered five hits and allowed one run in four innings of work. Jarrett Vega gave up the tying run in the eighth but picked up the win. Chase Wheatcroft earned his seventh save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
