CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseball team dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader, 5-3 and 3-2, at No. 9 Chico State.
In game one, SF State (3-12/3-7 CCAA) starter
Matthew Hernandez struck out six and allowed three runs over seven innings of work but settled for the the no-decision. The senior has now worked six innings or more in all four of his starts and is averaging 1.2 strikeouts per inning with a 2.77 ERA but is 1-2.
The Wildcats (10-4/6-2 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in the third but Hernandez helped his cause by fielding a bases-loaded bunt and getting the out at home. Hernandez struck out a pair to start the fourth but surrendered a Luke Hussung homer that made it 3-0.
A three run shot by
David Mansell, his second homer of the season, tied the game in the seventh.
Brady Dorn and
Antone Self, who both singled, scored on the play.
Grant Vogenthaler (0-2) came in for the eighth and got two quick outs. However, RJ Hassey's single kept the inning alive and back-to-back errors led to a pair of runs.
In game two,
Jason Hare's two-run double in the second inning gave the Gators an early advantage. The Wildcats got a run back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a two-out error. That would prove costly, as Chico State tied the game in the fifth on Kyle Blakeman's two-out double and went ahead for good in the sixth on Michael Lagier's pinch hit RBI single.
Reliever
Cameron Crone surrendered the hit in the sixth but the run was charged to starter
Dillon Houser (1-3), who took the loss. Houser was touched for seven hits in five and a third innings of work. He struck out two and walked a pair. Hilario Tovar (1-2) struck out eight over eight innings and picked up the game two win for the Wildcats.
