LAS VEGAS – The San Francisco State softball team is still looking for that first win of the 2018 season after the Gators fell to the Academy of Art, 11-5, and Central Washington, 9-1, on day two of the Desert Stinger tournament.
In game one, the Gators (0-4) scored in the first inning for the third-straight contest, with
Andrea Hildan leading off with a single to the left side and advancing to second on
Madison Collins' sacrifice bunt. Hildan then stole third and came around to score on
Michelle Castro's fielder's choice.
Academy of Art took the lead in the third on a two-run shot off the bat by Lauryn Henderson followed by a solo home run by Samantha Klune to left, bringing the score to 3-1. SF State got one of the runs back in the bottom half as
Sara Higa singled home Castro, who reached on a bunt single and then stole second.
Trailing 8-2, SF State brought the offense in the bottom of the sixth. With one out
Katie Rohrer singled up the middle and advanced to second on
Angelica Terrel's walk.
Kylee Brown came up and smacked a double down the right field line to score Roher and move Terrel to third. Pinch hitter
Jenee Wilson scored
Megan Asher, who pinch ran for Terrel, on a fielder's choice. Next batter Haylee Nunes plated Brown on a ground out to the pitcher to cap off the three-run inning and cut the deficit to 8-5.
The Urban Knights answered back with three more runs in the top of the seventh to go back up by six and seal the victory on Saturday.
Game two against Central Washington saw the Gators tie the score 1-1 in the top of the second behind Brown's double to center that scored Rohrer. The Wildcats answered with five in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the third to take an 8-1 lead early on. In the bottom of the sixth the Wildcats found one last run to secure run-rule the victory.
