WBB | Gators Play Tough But Fall to First-Place Tritons, 80-63

Iozzia leads way with 21 on five-of-five shooting from deep

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's basketball team fell to the first-place UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday at The Swamp, 80-63.

Rachel Iozzia went five-for-five from deep for her third game of the season with five-made triples, and led the Gators with a career-high 21 points. Tyiteyana Jefferson dropped 18 on eight-of-nine from the charity stripe, while Jhaina Stephens had 16 points and hauled in nine rebounds. Kaleigh Pugh added six, and Amani Alexander had two to round out the scoring.

SF State (5-15/3-14 CCAA) outshot the visitors, going 50 percent from the field (23-of-46) and 50 percent (five-of-ten) from beyond the arc but couldn't bounce back from a 28-point second quarter by the Tritons (19-3/15-1 CCAA).

Stephens got the first two baskets for the Gators and Iozzia drained her first three of the evening to put SF State up 8-3 midway through the first. Another Iozzia triple tied things at 15-all, and both teams traded baskets to end the first knotted 19-19.

UC San Diego opened up the second quarter on a 9-0 run before Jefferson hit two from the line, with the Gators only down 28-22. The Tritons then closed out the half on another run of seven-straight points, capped off by Mikayla Williams' three consecutive free throws to carry a 47-33 lead at the break.

Jefferson hit a layup in the second off an assist from Stephens, and Iozzia hit another three to start the third and make it just a nine-point deficit for SF State. The Tritons continued to roll with three-straight baskets from Dalayna Sampton to push the lead to 12 at 58-46.

Sampton hit another jumper to start the fourth as the Tritons extended the advantage to 17. SF State continued to fight with back-to-back jumpers by Stephens and Pugh, and Jefferson later hit another pair from the line to cut it to ten. Down 80-60 in the closing minute Jefferson hit a jumper as well as the and-one from the stripe.
