SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State softball team got back to their winning ways on Sunday, defeating the visiting Stanislaus State Warriors 5-1 in game one of the day. The Gators would fall late on game two, 6-2, to wrap up the series.
Lindsey Cassidy struck out the side to start the second, part of her five strikeouts on the day. The Gators (8-16/5-10 CCAA) plated five in the bottom half of the inning, which started with a bases-loaded walk by
Madison Collins.
Michelle Castro then knocked a single to center field that scored
Mallory Cleveland and
Angelica Terrel.
Andrea Hildan followed suit with a single of her own, this time to left that plated Collins and Castro to cap off the five-run frame.
Stanislaus (13-8/8-6 CCAA) led off the fifth with a double by Maya Yoshiura, but the Gator defense put together great plays behind Cassidy to strand the Stanislaus runners. The Warriors would break through in the seventh on a RBI single by Ruby Quiralte, but Cassidy got Alanah Laupua-Vanisi to ground out to end the game and seal the 5-1 win.
In game two, the Warriors put runners on in the third and fourth innings, but the Gators remained stout on defense to leave them stranded. The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on Desiree Gonzalez's sacrifice fly to center field that scored pinch runner Kaitlyn Doyle.
The Gators knotted the score in the bottom half 1-1. Castro doubled to left with one out, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. With one down in the sixth,
Megan Asher singled through the left side and later stole second. Following a hit-by-pitch by Collins, Castro hit her second double of the game to left, scoring Asher and giving SF State a late 2-1 advantage.
Stanislaus bounced back to regain the lead in the top of the seventh with Alexus Martinez hitting triple to left that scored a pair to make it 3-2. The rally continued as Aliyah Garvin plated Martinez on a single, Deja Guzman hit a sacrifice fly to left, and Laupua-Vanisi got a one-run single of her own to put the Warriors up 6-2.
Karla Soto started game two, going all seven innings with one strikeout. Castro went 4-for-4 in game two with a pair of doubles, which is the second time this season she has registered two doubles, and the fourth time this season a Gator has notched four hits.
