SB | Pitching Powers Gators to Friday Sweep

CARSON, Calif. – The San Francisco State softball team logged its third doubleheader sweep of the season on Friday, taking down host Cal State Dominguez Hills 5-3 and 3-1 (8).

Katie Rohrer led off the second with a walk, and came around to score as Angelica Terrel reached on an error to make it 1-0. The Gators (10-16/7-10 CCAA) added another in the third, this time by Michelle Castro who also led off the frame on a walk. With Castro on third, Andrea Hildan stole second and forced a throwing error by the catcher that allowed Castro to cross home. Dominguez Hills (9-14/7-11 CCAA) tied it up in the fourth on Kelcy Telles' bases-loaded walk and Jazmin Guzman's RBI single to left.

In the seventh, Sara Higa walked with two outs and advanced to third on Rohrer's single. That brought up Mallory Cleveland, who knocked her second home run of the season to left field and put the Gators up 5-2. Damari Simon led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left, narrowing the deficit to two. Karla Soto, who came in to pitch in the fourth, got out of the inning for her second victory of the year.

Linsey Cassidy got the start, tossing 3.1 innings with three strikeouts. Soto threw the remaining 3.2 innings and went the distance in game two.

In this contest, Soto retired the Toros in order in the first and fourth innings, with both teams heading into the fifth tied 0-0. The hosts finally broke through in the bottom half as Kendelle Messersmith led off with a triple and scored on Chloe Wenger's double to center.

In the seventh, the Gators found the tying run to stay alive. Rohrer singled to second, was sacrificed to second, and was replaced by pinch runner Jenee Wilson. Wilson then stole third and Madison Collins hit a two-strike double to right to tie things up, 1-1. With two down in the eigthth, Castro doubled to right-center, Andrea Hildan followed with a double of her own, and Hayley Nunes doubled to left to put SF State up 3-1. Soto closed the door in the bottom half to seal the sweep.

Hildan went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and RBI in game two. Meanwhile Soto held the hosts to just one earned on four hits.
