TURLOCK, Calif. – The San Francisco State softball team struggled on Sunday, resulting in a pair of setbacks to Western Oregon, 8-1, and Concordia (Ore.), 4-2. The Gators wrapped up the Tournament of Champions with a 2-4 record.
The Wolves (15-13) took a 1-0 lead in the second of game one on Ayanna Arceneaux's RBI single to right, and they made it 2-0 after three on Jenna Kelly's sacrifice fly to right that plated Ryanne Huffman.
SF State (14-20) struggled at the plate, recording just one hit through the first four innings which came from
Michelle Castro to start the game. The visitors extended their lead in the fourth to 7-0, plating five runs on five hits.
The Gators finally broke through in the fifth as
Kylee Brown walked and advanced to second on a groundout. Andrea Hilden then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, and Brown came across to make it 7-1.
Karla Soto retired Western Oregon in order in the bottom half, capped off by a great diving play by
Hayley Nunes.
Madison Collins and Castro both extended their reach-base streaks to 15 and 12, respectively, in game one.
Lindsey Cassidy threw 3.1 innings in the start with a pair of strikeouts while Soto threw 2.2 in relief with just one earned.
In game two, Concordia (16-13) scored in the first and second to take an early 2-0 advantage. Soto struck out the final two batters to end the third, part of her three strikeouts performance.
In the fourth, Hildan led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. After stealing third, she came across the plate on a Cavalier error to make it 2-1. Concordia would add another in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, however the Gators got it right back the next frame.
Mallory Cleveland led off with a single and Collins doubled her home on a shot to left.
Mackenzie Smith gave the Cavaliers added an insurance run in the fifth after she led off with a double to left to make it 4-2. Soto and the Gator defense sat Concordia down in order in the sixth, over SF State couldn't get the two runs they needed, resulting in the loss.
SF State added a pair of stolen bases on Sunday, giving them 87 for the year which is the third most in program history.
