SAN FRANCISCO – A RBI double off the bat of
Katie Rohrer in the sixth inning of game two on Friday helped the San Francisco State softball team cap off the doubleheader with a 2-1 victory over the No. 18 UC San Diego Tritons. The Gators were edged out in game one of the day, 2-0.
The Tritons (21-10/14-10) got on the board in the first on Lauren Sanders' RBI single to right that scored Kendall Baker.
Lindsey Cassidy made quick work of the visitors in the top of the third, retiring the side in just six pitches.
Madison Collins got the first Gator (15-21/10-11) hit of the day in the bottom half on a sharp double down the left field line, however SF State couldn't bring her around to knot the score. Cassidy again blanked the Tritons in under ten pitches, this time in the fourth and fifth innings. UC San Diego added another in the seventh to take a 2-0 lead on Bobbi Aguirre's base hit to left that scored Maddy Lewis.
SF State struggled at the plate in game one, only recording four hits in the contest, three of which came in the fourth inning but the Gators couldn't summon a run to avoid the shutout. Cassidy went the distance in the setback, recording a pair of strikeouts.
In game two, the Tritons once again took an early 1-0 lead. In the third, Lewis knocked a single to right that scored Sherriah Harrington from second.
Rohrer whacked the first pitch she saw in the fourth over the right-field wall for her fourth home run of the season to tie things up, 1-1.
Sara Higa ended the top of the sixth with a great diving stop and throw from third for the out.
In the bottom half with one out,
Hayley Nunes singled to right and Rohrer plated her from first on a booming double to left to give the Gators the 2-1 lead.
Karla Soto shut the door in the top of the seventh for her seventh complete game victory of the season.
Michelle Castro notched her 29
th stolen base of the season, tying her for second place all-time in Gator history. SF State recorded three more stolen bases on Friday, giving the club 90 this year which is the third-post in program history. It is the third-straight season the Gators have defeated a ranked team, with SF State downing ranked Chico State the previous two seasons.
