CARSON, Calif. — The San Francisco State baseaball team's offense exploded for 19 hits and got strong pitching as the Gators took both games of Friday's doubleheader, 7-2 in 11 innings and 6-0 in a seven-inning game, at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Gators (10-18/10-13 CCAA) needed extra innings to win game one but guaranteed a series win with a shutout in game two. Gators starter
Matthew Hernandez allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out seven in six innings of work but left with the Gators down a run. Hernandez now has 55 strikeouts this season, third most among CCAA pitchers.
Jack Harris' home run in the fifth cut into the early Toros (8-21/5-18 CCAA) lead and
Trevor Rogers' groundout in the eighth tied the game at 2-2. SF State manufactured five runs in the 11th inning.
Connor Fidone was intentionally walked to load the bases, then
Damon DeVirgilio plated a run to make it 3-2.
Chris Smutny added an insurance run with a sac fly, then
Jackson Kritsch doubled home a run before
Harley Lopez added another sac fly to make it 7-2.
Jack Higgins,
Jordan Yrastorza,
Cameron Crone, and
Jordyn Eglite combined for five innings of scoreless work in game one. Eglite, who owns a team-best 1.80 ERA, picked up his first victory.
In game two,
Dillon Houser (3-3) scattered four hits over seven innings of shutout baseball for his second complete-game and first shutout of the seasson. Houser's ERA now stands at 2.91.
Another Lopez sac fly in the first gave the Gators all the offense they needed but
Zac Neumann's two-run single added some insurance. Rogers capped off the day with a three-run blast in the fifth, marking the redshirt freshman's first career homer.
