SAN BERNARDINO — The San Francisco State baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader at Cal State Bernardino. The Gators won game one 9-7 and fell 7-6 in seven innings in game two.
The Gators (16-21/15-16 CCAA) used a five-run fourth inning to take game one. The Coyotes (11-26/11-20 CCAA) led 3-0 thanks to Gabe Chavez's first-inning homer and a two-run homer by Jake Peloquin in the second. In the third,
Brady Dorn got the Gators on the board with an RBI single and
Jack Harris pulled the Gators to within a run with a sac fly.
Jordan Abernathy led the fourth off with full-count walk, then
Antone Self was hit by a pitch.
Jackson Kritsch loaded the bases with a fielder's choice, then
Chris Smutny drew a five-pitch walk to tie the game at 3-3. The Gators plated a run on
Harley Lopez's fielder's choice, then Dorn tripled home a pair.
Trevor Rogers capped the inning with a sac fly to make it 7-4.
The Gators added a run in the sixth. Smutny led off the inning with a single, then stole second, then third. He came around to score on Dorn's RBI single to left field. The Coyotes scored an unearned run in the eighth inning but the Gators got it right back in the ninth on Lopez's two-out RBI single to right field.
CSUSB made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. The Coyotes scored a run on a passed ball strike three and a fielder's choice, bringing up the tying run to the plate but
Jordan Yrastorza got a Garrett Ouellette fly ball to end the game.
Dillon Houser (4-3) allowed four runs on five hits in five and two thirds innings but picked up the win.
In game two, the Gators hit three home runs but the bullpen couldn't protect the lead as the Gators fell late.
Harley Lopez's two-run shot in the first gave SF State an early lead but CSUSB grabbed the lead on Chavez's bases-clearing double in the second, then Erick Allegro homered in the third to make it 4-2.
In the fifth,
Connor Fidone tied it 4-4 with a two-run homer and
Harley Lopez went back-to-back with his second homer of the day to give the Gators a 5-4 lead.
Gators starter
Jeff Piver's day ended when he loaded the bases in fifth. The bullpen couldn't get the job done though.
Daniel Jimenez induced a pop up but hit Ouellette to tie the game at 5-5. A leadoff was in the sixth proved costly as CSUSB scored a pair of runs off of Yrastorza.
In the seventh,
Brady Dorn singled and
Johnny Juarez kept the inning alive with a walk. Harris singled home Dorn but pinch-runner
Kyler Crone was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second on a 9-3-2 cutoff to end the game.
Lopez went 5-for-10 on the day with five RBIs, four runs, and his pair of homers.
