ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – A five-run second inning propelled the San Francisco State softball team to a game two victory on Friday as the Gators split with host RV Sonoma State in the series opening doubleheader. SF State was edged out in game one, 2-1, but bounced back in game two to win 5-0.
In game one, both starting pitchers limited the opposition in the first three innings, with
Lindsey Cassidy allowing just one hit during that stretch while holding the Seawolves (26-19/18-14 CCAA) scoreless.
Andrea Hildan led off the fourth with a single to left and was moved to second on
Hayley Nunes' sacrifice bunt to third.
Katie Rohrer reached on an infield single, and
Madison Collins loaded the bases after reaching on an error. This brought up
Sara Higa, who worked a walk to force in a run and give SF State (21-27/16-17 CCAA) a 1-0 lead.
Sonoma State took the lead in the fifth on Alee Balanon's two-run double to left-center. Cassidy got Aubrey Blakenburg out swinging to start the bottom of the sixth for her first strikeout of the day., but the Gator offense couldn't bring across the tying run as the hosts escaped with the series opening win.
Karla Soto got the start in game two and got all the offense she needed early. The Gators broke through in the second as Higa doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Mallory Cleveland reached on an error, and
Angelica Terrel singled home Higa for the first run. After
Savannah Ozuna walked to load the bases,
Michelle Castro knocked a two-run single to center to make it 3-0. Next batter Hildan continued the rally with a triple to right-center, scoring Castro and Ozuna to put SF State up 5-0.
Soto blazed through the Sonoma lineup in the third, fourth, and fifth innings as she sat the Seawolves down in order. Friday's game two win is the second shutout victory for the Gators this season and Soto's 11
th complete game. She only allowed three hits and walked none in the victory.
The victory matches SF State's win total from last year with 21. Higa's double in game two tied her for tenth all-time in program history for career doubles with 26.
