SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team secured a fourth-straight series win with a 5-2 victory over visiting Cal State East Bay on Sunday at Maloney Field.
The Gators (20-22/19-17 CCAA) got a complete game from
Matthew Hernandez and a seventh-inning home run from
Chris Smutny to top Cal State East Bay 5-2 in Sunday's series finale at Maloney Field.
With two outs in the seventh and the game tied 2-2,
Harley Lopez and
Jack Harris drew back-to-back walks.
Chris Smutny then made the Pioneers (20-22/17-19 CCAA) pay with a three-run shot to left that proved to be the eventual game-winner.
Hernandez (4-4) needed just 96 pitches to go the distance. He struck out six and scattered just five hits and a walk. His only blemish came in the sixth when Dakota Conners and Dallas Dey recorded back-to-back singles that tied the game 2-2. With those six strikeouts, Hernandez's 71 on the season become the sixth-most in a single season by a Gator.
The Pioneers used six pitchers in the series finale. Starter Jacob Nelson allowed just two hits in three innings but the Gators got to the bullpen in the fourth. After a five-pitch walk to
Jack Harris, Smutny drove him home with a double to center to put the Gators up 1-0. In the fifth,
Connor Fidone reached thanks to an errant throw that went into the Gators dugout. That allowed Fidone to move up to second base and he scored easily from on
Brady Dorn's game-tying single to right field.
