ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped its CCAA opener, 2-0, at No. 25 Sonoma State on Friday at Seawolf Soccer Field.
San Francisco State (1-3-0/0-1-0 CCAA) allowed a pair of first-half goals to the nationally-ranked Seawolves (4-0-2/2-0-0 CCAA). The Golden Gators were outshot 15-7 and 7-2 shots on goal.
The Seawolves established an early lead with a goal in the fourth minute on Bella Amyx's unassisted goal. Her shot through the box went to the right of goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki, who came forward to protect the net. In the 39th minute, Sonoma State doubled its lead on Molly Murphy's goal. Murphy shot from just inside the box on the left side and finished to the far corner.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second half and the Gators looked much more composed. San Francisco State attempted five of the team's seven shots in the second half and accounted for four of five corner kicks in the second period, compared to just one of six in the first half.
Head Coach Tracy Hamm: "We made a mistake early in the game and they capitalized. Unfortunately against quality teams like Sonoma State, you can get punished. We responded well by playing a better second half but, moving forward, we need to be more consistent."
The Golden Gators head to Humboldt State on Sunday, September 16 for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff. Live coverage will be provided by the Lumberjacks. In-game updates will be available on Twitter at
