ARCATA, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team notched a 1-0 victory at CCAA foe Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field.
San Francisco State (2-3-0/1-1-0 CCAA) outshot the Lumberjacks (2-3-1/0-2-0 CCAA) 11-8 and held a 6-4 corner kick advantage. The Golden Gators were markedly more physical, whistled for a dozen fouls and two yellow cards to just five fouls by the 'jacks.
Madison Messier gave the Golden Gators all they needed just over two minutes in. From the outside of the box on the right side, Niko Baila served in a cross into Messier, who headed the ball from 10 yards out to the near post to make it 1-0. Messier had another shot a minute later that went wide right. HSU fired off shots in the 27th and 29th minutes but the Lumberjacks offense was held shotless the next 16 minutes.
HSU attempted four more shots in the second half but again the San Francisco State defense clamped down and kept the Humboldt State offense at bay for the final 21 minutes.
Head Coach Tracy Hamm: "We battled today. Sunday games are always tough physically and mentally, but we showed up to play. I'm happy with the result. It was definitely a 'team' win and our players off the bench were fantastic."
The Golden Gators host Holy Names in non-conference action at Skyline College Soccer Field on Wednesday, September 19 for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff. Live stats will be available at
