SAN BRUNO, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team moved to .500 with a 1-0 non-conference victory over Holy Names on Wednesday afternoon.
San Francisco State (3-3-0) outshot the Hawks (1-4) 18-2 and held a 6-0 corner kick advantage.
Monique Ponce's goal in the 19th minute was all the Golden Gators needed to hand the Hawks their fourth consecutive loss. A free kick by Janessa Staab was saved by goalkeeper Alyssa Lopez but Lopez wasn't able to hold on and Ponce fired the rebound in for the score. Holy Names' first-half opportunity came in the 32nd minute but Nicki Rucki smothered the ball for the save.
Holy Names pushed forward as time wound down. It resulted in a shot in the 80th minute that Rucki saved. A yellow card on Jocelyn Reyes in the final minutes negated a potential Holy Names goal.
Head Coach Tracy Hamm: "It was another battle and I'm happy with the end result. Now we have to turn around and get ready for our CCAA games Friday and Sunday."
The Gators next head to Southern California for a pair of CCAA matches at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, September 21 and Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, September 23. San Francisco State's next home contest is September 28 versus Cal State LA. Live stats will be available at
