SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team won its third consecutive match with a 3-0 victory at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at Premier Field.
Goalkeeper Nicki Rucki played a vital end at both ends of the field. The sophomore recorded six saves and assisted on the Golden Gators' first goal of the game.
San Francisco State (4-3-0/2-1-0 CCAA) outshot the Coyotes (2-5-0/1-1-0 CCAA) 9-7, though CSUSB placed six of those on frame and held a 4-3 corner kick advantage. The Gators converted on 60 percent of their shots on goal.
Madison Messier applied the pressure on CSUSB with shot in the 6th and 13th minute. At the other end, Rucki was tested but made the save on Kelly Kevershan's shot in the seventh minute. Due to the 95 degrees temperatures in San Bernardino, the two teams took a water break midway through the half. A couple of minutes later, Summer Langsam had a shot saved but a minute later, a heads-up play put San Francisco State on the board. Rucki passed the ball downfield to Marriah Perez, who finished from 10 yards out.
CSUSB had a plethora of opportunities early in the second half with all four of their corner kicks in the span of five minutes. However, the Coyotes only got one shot attempt out of their set pieces that was saved by Rucki. The Gators countered in the 58th minute and Madison Messier netted her second goal of the season with a 12-yard shot off of the assists from Perez and Emily Kaleal. In the 77th minute, Valentina Riveros scored off of a corner kick to put the game out of reach. Rucki made a pair of saves before giving way to Domenique Banta, who went unchallenged in her first appearance as a Gator.
Head Coach Tracy Hamm: "We played well. It was a tough game with the conditions, but we were able to capitalize on our chances. We were an offensive threat in a variety of ways today and scored some nice goals. Nicki Rucki was fantastic too, she played very well."
The Gators wrap up their Southern California road trip on Sunday, September 23 at Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is slated for 11:30 a.m. with live coverage provided by the Broncos. San Francisco State's next home contest is September 28 versus Cal State LA. Live stats will be available at
