POMONA, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw on Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona.
San Francisco State (4-3-1/2-1-1 CCAA) escaped to the draw despite being outshot 17-5 by the Broncos (4-3-1/0-1-1 CCAA). CPP also held a 4-2 corner kick advantage. The shutout was the fifth by the Gators this season and fourth in a row.
San Francisco State goalkeeper Nicki Rucki made a big save in the seventh minute. The Broncos' Samantha Putnam attempted a penalty kick but Rucki guessed correctly and made the stop. The Golden Gators fired off two shots in the first half but did not place either on frame.
Madison Messier's shot in the 73rd minute was saved by Broncos goalkeeper Sydney Williams. Rucki made four more saves in the half to keep the Broncos in check.
Ally LaCarra-Platt's shot in the 99th minute went wide for CPP. Tami Kwong's shot in the final minute of the first overtime period could've won it but Williams made her second stop of the day to preserve the shutout. Rucki left the game due to injured and Domenique Banta played the final 10 minutes. She tipped a ball over the crossbar to preserve the shutout. The Broncos attempted four more shots in double overtime but none were on frame.
Head Coach Tracy Hamm: "We played hard, I'm really proud of the team. It's not easy to get a shutout on the road. Our goalkeeping, from both Nicki and Dom, was the best I've seen. They kept us in the game and got us a much needed result."
San Francisco State returns home next home for the next four matches, beginning Friday, September 28 versus Cal State LA. Live stats and video will be available at
