ARCATA, Calif. — Despite being a man down in the final 20 minutes, the San Francisco State men's soccer team picked up a point in 1-1 tie at Humboldt State on Sunday in CCAA play.
San Francisco State (4-0-2/1-0-1 CCAA) outshot the Lumberjacks (3-1-2/0-0-2 CCAA) 20-14 and 14-8 shots on goal. The Golden Gators also held a 12-5 corner kick advantage.
Humboldt State put the pressure on early with a goal in the seventh minute. Francisco Calderon fed Gus Baxter from the middle and Baxter beat an outstretched
Peter Swinkels into the corner. San Francisco State took the next eight shots of the contest, the eighth which resulted in a tie game in the 40th minute.
Feliciano Cardenas got a breakaway down the right side and finished low and inside.
Humboldt State opened the half with five of the first six shots in the half but the Golden Gators defense held steady. San Francisco State had a few opportunities beginning in the 58th minute but all three shots were saved. In the 71st minute, a San Francisco State foul resulted in a penalty kick for the Jacks but Swinkels stopped Baxter's attempt. Baxter had a header with nine seconds to go in regulation but Swinkels saved that as well. A total of 28 fouls were divvied out, plus six yellow cards and a costly red card on Moses Gutierrez in the 89th minute that forced the Golden Gators to play a man down in overtime.
The Gators found themselves on defense most of the first overtime period but all three Jacks shots were off frame. The Gators had back-to-back corner kicks in the second overtime but were unable to convert.

The Gators next head to Southern California for a pair of matches at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, September 21 and Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, September 23. San Francisco State's next home contest is September 28 versus Cal State LA.
