TURLOCK, Calif. - The San Francisco State volleyball team fought hard on Saturday but fell in five to host Stanislaus State, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 18-16 to wrap up their road trip.
- Saturday's contest was the Gators' (7-6/2-4 CCAA) second-straight five-set match and third this season.
- SF State had 58 kills on the night, which is tied for the second-most this year.
- Jessica Haynie led the way with 18 kills while hitting .267. Maura Donovan added a season-high 20 digs, while Payton Jensen recorded a career-high 56 assists.
Haynie notched a kill early on to tie things up early 5-5. The Warriors (10-4/3-3 CCAA) then pulled ahead 15-10 after a 4-1 run midway through the frame before another Haynie kill off an assist by Jensen ended the run. Jensen dropped in an ace as SF State rattled off four-straight points to cut it to two and prompt a Stanislaus timeout. The Gators tied things up at 21 behind two Warrior miscues and a kill from Johnson. She would later knot the score 23-23 on a kill right in front of the Warrior back line, but the hosts got back-to-back swings to take set one, 25-23.
A ball handling error put the Purple and Gold up 1-0 in the second, and back-to-back kills by Haynie made it a 7-4 Gator lead. Olivia Tabron had a big swing down the line to extend the lead 10-6. SF State put together another 4-0 run to go up 17-10, which featured another Bailey Johnson kill coupled with Warrior mistakes. Haynie had her first ace of the night as SF State went up 21-17, and Morris gave the Gators match point before a bad set ended set two 25-20.
The Warriors stormed to a 4-1 lead before multiple errors tied it up, 4-4. Johnson had back-to-back swings at the net to tie it up 12-12, but the hosts pulled ahead 21-17, and ended the set on a 4-0 run to take the 25-18 win and 2-1 match advantage.
Tied up nine-all, Tabron and Haynie gave the Gators a two-point lead. The back and forth continued before Johnson had a big kill and Brenna Dougherty dropped in an ace to put SF State up 19-16. Haynie's kill propelled SF State to the 20-point plateau with a two point lead. Donovan recorded and ace and Johnson's tenth kill of the night gave the Gators the 25-22 set win.
Stanislaus took a 4-1 lead, but SF State tied it up 6-6. Trailing 13-9, Tabron dropped in a kill to cut it to three. With their backs against the wall down 14-10, Drew Morris logged consecutive kills and Donovan added another ace to make it a one-point contest and a Warrior attack error tied it up 14-14. SF State continued to battle back to tie it up once again 16-all, but the Warriors prevail to get two-straight points for the match win.
The Gators return home on Tuesday, September 25 to take on Chico State at 7 p.m. Live stats and a stream will be provided.
