WSOC | Seattle Pacific Spoils Home Opener

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped its home opener, 4-1, to visiting Seattle Pacific on Saturday at Cox Stadium.

A power outage that affected the entire campus put a damper on the festivities before the day began, though the contest did start on time. San Francisco State (1-2-0) outshot Seattle Pacific (3-0-1) 12-7, though the Falcons converted two-thirds of their shots on goal. The physical match saw 17 fouls and two yellow cards issued.

First Half
Things got off to a tough start for the Golden Gators. In the third minute, goalkeeper Nicki Rucki was hit in the face on a loose ball in front of the net and Makayla Sonstelie scored the loose ball into an undefended net. Athletic trainer Nicole Shimotake came onto the field to check on the sophomore goalkeeper, who was visibly shaken up but ultimately stayed in the game. In the 21st minute, the Falcons converted a set piece from the left side. Sydnee Smith booted in and Sophia Chilczuk headed her second goal of the season. Tami Kwong gave the Golden Gators life in the 26th minute with a goal to the far post with the assist from Ana Williams. San Francisco State nearly tied the game in the 35th minute. Williams streaked down the left side, then fed the ball into Kylie Schneider but her goal was waived off due to an offsides call.

Second Half

The Gators had another opportunity in the 61st minute. Marriah Perez dribbled the ball down two thirds of the field, then fed the ball to Kwong, whose shot was blocked. SPU countered and scored at the other end on a Megan Moore goal to make it 3-1. Chilczuk put the game out of reach in the final minutes with her second goal of the day.

Quotables

Head Coach Tracy Hamm: "We gave up two fairly soft goals that put us down early. We had to make a bunch of adjustments to get back into the game and they took advantage. We changed formations to try to get a goal back quickly. We did, which was positive, but they have a lot of returners and played a more composed second half than we did."
